// THE LEXICON
Terms of War.
Warhammer jargon, Madden terminology, and military doctrine vocabulary — defined for the uninitiated and the veteran alike.
A
Alpha Strike
—A first-turn assault with overwhelming concentrated firepower designed to destroy or cripple the enemy's key assets before they can respond. The opposite of Liddell Hart's indirect approach, but devastating when correctly timed.
Astra Militarum
—The Imperial Guard in Warhammer 40K. Massed infantry, tanks, and artillery representing the conventional military forces of the Imperium. Knox's primary faction. Combined arms doctrine embodied in miniature.
B
Battle Shock
—A Warhammer 40K mechanic triggering when a unit loses more than half its strength in a single phase. Failed tests degrade unit effectiveness. Managing Battle Shock thresholds is part of list construction.
Best Coast Pairings (BCP)
—The primary tournament management platform for Warhammer 40K events. Used to track results, standings, pairings, and opponent history. Pre-tournament BCP research is intelligence work.
C
Center of Gravity (CoG)
—Clausewitz's concept: the source of an enemy's strength and power. In Warhammer, it's the one unit or combination that makes your opponent's list function. Identify it. Destroy it. Win.
Chemistry (MUT)
—In Madden Ultimate Team, the team chemistry system that unlocks stat boosts when players from the same team, scheme, or program are combined. Optimization of chemistry is force composition.
Clausewitz
—Carl von Clausewitz. Prussian general and military theorist. Author of "On War." Primary contributions: friction, fog of war, center of gravity, and the principle that war is politics by other means. Referenced constantly in Warhammer and Madden contexts.
Command Points (CP)
—The resource in Warhammer 40K that powers Stratagems — special in-game abilities triggered at cost. CP management is a core skill at competitive level. Burning CP at the wrong moment is a tactical error with strategic consequences.
D
Decisive Point
—The place and time where the application of force creates the most favorable outcome. Not necessarily where the most enemies are — where winning matters most. Objective play over kill hunting.
Detachment
—In Warhammer 40K, the organizational structure of a list that determines which Stratagems, enhancements, and rules are accessible. Detachment selection is the first strategic decision in list building.
E
Eldar (Aeldari)
—Knox's secondary Warhammer faction. Ancient alien warriors operating on psychic foresight, speed, and surgical precision. Where Astra Militarum wins through mass, Eldar wins through timing and positioning.
F
Featured (Ferdy)
—Recognition from Ferdy's "I Rate Your Teams" YouTube series, the premier weekly MUT team showcase. Being featured — especially 10/10 — signals elite-tier team building. HiveMind has been featured weekly throughout Season 26.
Friction
—Clausewitz's concept for the cumulative effect of small uncertainties and imperfections that disrupt military plans. In gaming: the dice, the unexpected opponent move, the misremembered rule. Plan for it.
G
Grand Tournament (GT)
—The highest tier of organized Warhammer 40K competitive play below Major/Super Major events. Strict format, large player fields, national circuit points. Knox competes at GT and Super Major level.
H
Harmony (Cathay mechanic)
—In Total War: Warhammer 3, the Cathay faction requires balancing Yin and Yang unit ratios across armies for peak performance. Mismanagement collapses both military effectiveness and economy simultaneously.
HiveMind
—Knox's Madden MUT competitive handle. Named for his former crypto community Hive Mind Crypto. Recognized by Ferdy as "king of I Rate Your Teams" in Season 26.
I
I Rate Your Teams
—Ferdy's weekly YouTube series reviewing submitted Madden Ultimate Team rosters. The community standard for team building recognition. HiveMind: three 10/10 appearances in Season 26.
Indirect Approach
—B.H. Liddell Hart's strategic doctrine: victory comes from attacking the enemy's vulnerabilities through unexpected angles, not meeting their strength head-on. Applied in Warhammer through positioning and Eldar mobility.
L
List Building
—The process of constructing a Warhammer 40K army within points and detachment constraints. The strategic planning phase before any dice are rolled. Meta awareness, doctrine, and resource allocation all begin here.
M
Meta
—The current competitive environment: which factions, units, and tactics are dominant at a given patch or ruleset state. Understanding the meta is intelligence work. Building against the meta is doctrine work.
Mission Scoring
—In competitive Warhammer, victory points are earned primarily through primary mission objectives, not kills. A common beginner error is optimizing for kills over objective control.
MUT (Madden Ultimate Team)
—Madden's competitive card-collection game mode. Players build rosters using collectible player cards, chemistry systems, and limited resources. Knox: MUT 26 Pro, 6 seasons Top 100, 64% win rate.
O
Objective Secured (Obsec)
—A special rule in Warhammer 40K that allows Infantry units to contest objectives even when outnumbered by non-Obsec units. Fundamental to mission scoring strategy. Astra Militarum conscripts exist partly for this.
OODA Loop
—Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. John Boyd's decision-cycle model. The faster you cycle through the loop, the less time your opponent has to respond. Speed of decision is a weapon.
On War (Vom Kriege)
—Clausewitz's masterwork. Published posthumously. The most analytically rigorous study of war ever written. Core concepts: friction, fog of war, culminating point, center of gravity.
S
Stratagem
—A special ability in Warhammer 40K, activated using Command Points at specific timings. Knowing your own stratagems — and your opponent's — is an intelligence requirement.
Sun Tzu
—Ancient Chinese military strategist. Author of "The Art of War." Most referenced military theorist in gaming communities, least understood. His principles on deception, intelligence, and avoiding strength remain directly applicable.
Super Major
—The largest tier of organized Warhammer 40K competitive events, above Grand Tournaments. National and international scope. Knox competes at this level alongside GT circuit.
T
TOTW (Team of the Week)
—Madden Ultimate Team's weekly promotional card series featuring highly-rated player cards. Knox has scored Perfect TOTW scores since Season 2.
W
Wahapedia
—The community-maintained comprehensive rules reference for Warhammer 40K. More current than official publications during FAQ cycles. Essential pre-tournament reference.
